It’s almost 2017. Can you believe it?
I took my own advice and gave presence this holiday season, hence the reason you haven’t seen a new post from me in the past few weeks.
Now my mind, like many others, has turned toward the upcoming new year. This time of year is often marked by reflection, introspection, resolutions, and intention setting.
Last year I shared a bit about why I don’t really like New Year’s resolutions. Quick recap: I think most times they’re quite forced and it’s unrealistic to expect that some arbitrary date will supply the desire or the motivation that is needed to truly make a change in one’s life.
HOWEVER, I’m all for the reflection and intention setting aspects of this time of year. I think it’s important to look over the past year and discern which actions and behaviors have served you and which have not, and then set realistic goals for the upcoming year accordingly.
WTF is Manifesting?
Here’s the traditional definition of the word:
- display or show (a quality or feeling) by one’s acts or appearance; demonstrate
- be evidence of; prove
- (of an ailment) become apparent through the appearance of symptoms
But the type of manifesting that we’re talking about is slightly different. Wayne Dyer defines manifesting as “the ability to convert the energy of our thoughts into a newly materialized form.” The idea is that all of our thoughts create energy, and if we are constantly thinking about something we want or need, then our wish for that thing will be fulfilled.
Imagine some of the things you think about, dream about, or pray about consistently. All of these thoughts/dreams/prayers create energy. What you put all of your energy toward is what will manifest in your life.
Let me give you an example:
One thing I am manifesting for my life for 2017 is an Etsy shop where I will sell my homemade, all natural skincare products! (Stay tuned – I will keep you all updated when it launches!). I think about it constantly – what I will name it, what products I will offer, how I will package them, how I will ship them, how I will market them, etc. I think and dream and pray about it all day long, and so I have no doubt that it will come to fruition.
The Law of Attraction
The Law of Attraction is “the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on.” It is considered one of twelve universal laws, meaning that they apply to everyone on Earth. So yes, even YOU can manifest what you want in your life! (Did I sound like a self-help coach right there? LOL).
Paulo Coelho wrote in his bestseller The Alchemist (which I can’t believe I haven’t done a book review on and will get right on that!) – “when you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it.” The idea is that something, whether it be the Universe or God, is acting as an invisible hand to bring our hypothetical thoughts and dreams to materialization.
This is a three step process:
- Ask – ask for what you want! Create a specific goal that you wish to reach.
- Believe – believe that you are able to reach this goal! Know that you are capable. Trust your intuition. Remain determined. Take action!
- Receive – reach your goal! It may have taken a long time. Be grateful for the process.
What you think about, you attract. So if you think positive thoughts, you attract positive experiences, and vice versa with negative thoughts. If you want to live a positive life, you must try to your best to keep a positive mindset.
Positivity is a huge part of the second step of the Law of Attraction – “believe.” A positive person believes that he or she is capable of reaching his or her dreams, while a negative person does not. Similarly a positive person believes he or she can overcome obstacles that may crop up on the way to reaching his or her goals.
Intention setting is a popular practice in the yoga world. Sometimes your teacher will encourage you to set an intention at the beginning of your yoga class. The new year is a particularly powerful time to set intentions!
An intention differs from a resolution. Resolutions are goals that are often firm and unwavering. Intentions are more overarching goals, and often more geared towards becoming a better version oneself or carrying out one’s purpose in the world.
A resolution might be “lose ten pounds,” while an intention might be “living a healthier lifestyle.”
Intentions are not tied to solid outcomes like resolutions are. Therefore, they allow us to forego any sense of failure that comes along with unmet resolutions and live our lives in more mindful and intentional ways.
Intention setting also correlates with the Law of Attraction. Let’s go back to my example of wanting to start an Etsy shop. First, I ask the universe to accommodate my dream of opening a shop. Then I set intentions for opening it, such as trusting my own talent and being patient as I wait for the shop to grow.
Some intentions you may set for the new year include:
- Being more present
- Being kinder/more compassionate
- Being less judgmental
- Keeping an open mind/heart
- Finding more peace in everyday life
- Being more adventurous
- Tapping into creativity more
What does your dream 2017 look like?
Come up with some realistic goals to help make 2017 the best year yet. Set intentions that will help you get there. Stay positive and don’t beat yourself up – intentions are overarching goals and will not be met 100% of the time.
Remember, what you think about and put energy towards you attract. Don’t waste your energy on things that don’t serve you.
Follow these guidelines and I am confident that you’ll be able to manifest the year of your dreams!
